Q1. What do you think the difference between corporal punishment and discipline?

A. What is the difference between discipline and punishment? The simplest definition of 'discipline' is 'to teach a child what is the right or wrong path and to choose the right path without fear or coercion'. On the other hand, 'punishment' is 'inflicting pain or embarrassment, or taking away something pleasurable to enforce behavior that is acceptable by the majority'.

By this site, I thought discipline is for education and has the right reason, and corporal punishment isn’t sure whether for education and has the appropriate reason.


Q2. When students get corporal punishment, what will effect on them?

A.Corporal punishments don’t improve student’s behavior or academic performance, and this is proved by the study done by states.
The students who got corporal punishment have reported subsequent problems with depression, fear and anger. These students often withdraw from school activities and disengage academically. And, it was found that victims of corporal punishment frequently have many problems with concentration, bad school achievement, bad behavior, intense dislike of authority, and some of them drop out from school.
More, corporal punishments have bad effects not only on victims but also on those who don’t directly get corporal punishment.

1. What’s the good point about corporal punishment?

A.    I think the children who got corporal punishment can become the kind of person who can understand another’s pain. It is important to learn making a distinction between what is all right to do and what one shouldn’t do when one was a child. Parents have a responsibility to bring up their children and teachers also have a responsibility to bring up their student. As a result of investigation, it was clear that corporal punishment have good influence.

2. What’s the bad point about corporal punishment?

A.    I think it is too much that arouse fear or injure. The children who got hard corporal punishment come to obey their parents and teachers, but it doesn’t mean they really understand distinction between what is all right and what one shouldn’t do. They just be scared the pain, so it’s not discipline.

In Yokohama public school, a teacher hit two students’ head by hand, because they were talking while other students were preparing for school lunch, and also they didn’t continue cleaning the class room.
He says that he regrets he damaged students heart.

This is an online newspaper article. This article says about the case that actually happened. This article says the student who got corporal punishment by male teacher got a cut on his head that required three stitches. The teacher was indicted for injurious assault, but the Supreme Court gives a decision of “not guilty.” In the last of this article, an experienced teacher said “If it is not guilty up to three stitches, I can give corporal punishment without apology.” I think the extent of the student’s injury is serious, and the teacher should be punished. This decision is likely to encourage another corporal punishment. I think this decision should be reconsidered.

Corporal punishment plants terror in children’s heart. Children come to obey out of terror, but it is not the case that children really understand that they did wrong things. As a result, children who get corporal punishment obey temporarily, but for the long term, they come to be full of fighting spirit, to do an antisocial act, and to get mentally unbalanced. Corporal punishment makes a wound that can’t be healed. Corporal punishment to children led the problem of bullying and the spirit of rebellion.

perspective parents

Parents inflict corporal punishment on their children for discipline. Parents must educate their children about things that must or must not to be done, rules, and words. In case of children who still can’t understand words, it is more effective to inflict corporal punishment than to scold by words. At the same time, according to circumstances, punishment only by words is not enough. In such cases, children come to behave outrageously. Parents want their child to become the kind of person who can understand another’s pain, so they inflict corporal punishment. In most cases, not only the children who get punishment but also parents who give punishment get hurt emotionally, so it is likely to sink into undutiful end.

Perspective: teacher

In the old days, corporal punishment was usual. Teachers could make students obey them. Recently, however, only small things can be taken as corporal punishment. So teachers can’t do compulsory thing. That’s problem.
Now under law, corporal punishment is banned. Even if I want a student to understand something important as moral, and then a student is against me, I can’t make him pr her by forcibly.
Also, if I do something not on purpose, it can be taken as corporal punishment. I know corporal punishment is bad thing, however, some day students might not obey teachers.

Perspective: board of education

There will be difference between what teacher says and parents or children do. We can’t see what was happening at the school, so we can’t know which one is true. However, we should take the responsibility when corporal punishment happens. That’s our job.
What we can do are making manual of corporal punishment and holding training of it for teachers, because we aren’t concerned with it directly. Actually, many boards of education are doing these kinds of things. Some are showing us materials on the web.
